Chuck and I were good friends?finishing up the tenth grade. We hung out a couple times a week. I also liked going over to his house because I enjoyed talking to his mother. Chuck was the last of the family at home?one in college and the other married. So his mom mostly sat at home watching TV, playing solitaire, and smoking while we were in school and when her husband was at work in the evenings. I knew that she enjoyed talking to me, too.

One day I went over there and she invited me in. I was sitting on the couch when she told me that Chuck was working that day at his new part-time job. I honestly didn't know that he was working that day. She laughed and left the room for a minute. She then came back and sat next to me on the couch. She said, "You can always talk to me!" So we talked for a bit and then she asked about my going out with Brenda, my steady. Then she said, "I have a personal question for you?but you don't have to answer it."
